Mastering Landscape Photography: Tips and Techniques

Landscape photography is a patient art. Unlike street or portrait photography, where you often react quickly to fleeting moments, landscapes reward careful planning and a willingness to wait for perfect conditions.

The Golden Hours

Shoot during golden hour — the first and last hour of sunlight — when warm, directional light creates long shadows and adds drama to even ordinary landscapes. The blue hour, just before sunrise and after sunset, offers another magical quality of light.

Plan your shoots in advance using apps like The Photographer's Ephemeris or PhotoPills to predict exactly where the sun will rise and set relative to your location.

Composition in Landscape

Strong foreground elements anchor landscape compositions and create a sense of depth. Look for rocks, flowers, leading lines, or any visual element that draws the viewer's eye from the foreground into the middle distance and beyond.

Don't always place the horizon in the center of the frame. When the sky is dramatic, give it more space. When the land is more interesting, let it dominate. The rule of thirds is a useful guide, though breaking it deliberately can be equally powerful.
